In the period between March 1, 2020 and June 30, 2020, HES and HES Extension faculty and staff were principal investigators or project directors on a total of 51 grant proposals submitted to external funding agencies, totaling $9,634,456. During this same time, HES and HES Extension received 36 grant awards totaling $3,334,812.

Leadership Changes Occur Over the Summer for HES

Brenda LohmanInterim Dean for the College of Human Environmental Sciences
Brenda Lohman, PhD has been appointed the Interim Dean for the College of Human Environmental Sciences as of August 1, 2020. Dr. Lohman is also a Professor in the Department of Human Development and Sciences.

Jill KanaleyAssociate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies
Jill Kanaley, PhD has been appointed the Associate Dean for HES Research and Graduate Studies for the College of Human Environmental Sciences as of August 1, 2020. Dr. Kanaley is also a Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology.

Jung Ha-BrookshireNew Department Chair for TAM and Co-Chair for PFP
Jung Ha-Brookshire, PhD is Chair of Textile and Apparel Management for the College of Human Environmental Sciences as of August 1, 2020. Dr. Ha-Brookshire is also the Director of Graduate Studies and Professor in the Department and Co-chair of the Personal Financial Planning Department.

Deanna SharpeNew Department Co-Chair for PFP
Deanna Sharpe, PhD is Interim Co-Chair of the Personal Financial Planning Department for the College of Human Environmental Sciences as of August 31, 2020. Dr. Sharpe is also an Associate Professor in the Department and Director of the Great Plains IDEA Program.


Faculty/Staff Awards and Honors

Jean ParsonsJean Parsons, PhD, Professor in Textile and Apparel Management, was made a Fellow of the Costume Society of America, the highest honor bestowed by the organization. This honor recognizes the dedication, commitment, leadership, and outstanding contributions of their members to the organization and to the field of dress and appearance.”


Dr. LimbergJacqueline Limberg, PhD, Assistant Professor in Nutrition & Exercise Physiology, received a grant from Washington University Institute of Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS) as she was one of the awardees of the 2020-2021 Clinical and Translational Research Funding Program. Dr. Limberg also received the Shih-Chun Wang Young Investigator Award of $10,000 from the American Physiological Society.


Alex Embree, Student Services Coordinator, was selected to be part of the 2019-2020 cohort of the UM System Advisor Development program. ADP focuses on professional development of advisors and student success professionals in the UM System. Through the program, we identified ways that we can use our unique combination of strengths to contribute to the student success goals outlined in the UM System strategic priorities and Compact for Excellence in Student Success. She was able to collaborate with advisors and administrators from all four UM campuses and contributed some of her learning toward the goals that HES has for the new Office for Undergraduate Academic Programs and Student Success.


Jennifer BeanJennifer Bean, MS, RDN, LD Assistant Teaching Professor Nutrition & Exercise Physiology, was awarded The Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award, Undergraduate Teaching Award category. These awards were created to recognize the outstanding and innovative efforts of faculty, staff, teaching assistants and graduate instructors involved in using educational technologies to meaningfully improve teaching and learning at Mizzou.


HES Rapid Response Research (RAPID) Grants awarded Related to COVID 19

HES Faculty responded quickly to a call for proposals for new research projects that will enhance our knowledge about COVID-19 or about how to tackle medical, personal, social, economic, community or any other issues stemming from COVID-19 challenges and societal impacts and responses.

Student Honors and Awards

Dain JacobDain Jacob (2nd year masters student in NEP and native of Columbia) received 3rd place recognition at the Cardiovascular Research Day poster competition in February. His poster was titled: The Effect of Acute Hyperinsulinemia on Neurovascular Transduction in Healthy Humans.

Dain Jacob also received the 2020 CANTROL Environmental Systems award from the Exercise and Environmental Physiology group of the American Physiological society on April 6, 2020 (virtual awards meeting).

Taohua Wen, MU Department of Personal Financial Planning senior, placed second in the FINRA/ACCI Undergraduate Student Poster Competition for her research titled “Online and Mobile Investment Technology Adoption Among U.S. Investors.” Gary Mottola, Research Director with Investor Education at FINRA, made the announcement on May 19 at the American Council on Consumer Interest Annual Conference held virtually. Dr. Lu Fan served as her faculty mentor. Taohua and Dr. Fan, congratulations!

PFP Students Geo Lima, Emily Meyer, and Conner Thompson selected to represent MU Department of Personal Financial Planning at the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE) Annual Conference on November 18-20. The MU PFP department was selected as one of six elite financial planning programs to participate in the 2020 AFCPE Financial Counseling Knowledge Bowl! Dr. Jim Green, CFP®, AFC® serves as the team’s coach/mentor.

MU Personal Financial Planning students received scholarships during the 2020 “Develop a Financial Plan” competition. Finalists for the competition presented their plans in late April to a panel of judges, professors, and students. Together, the department and Northwestern Mutual awarded scholarships to the following students:

  • First Place – $1,500 scholarship: Kale Flaspohler, Nicholas Loeffelman, Brenden Volcko
  • Second Place – $1,000 scholarship: Clayton Powell, Cody Knight, Kayla Charlton
  • Third Place – $500 scholarship: Amanda Fitter, Zongze Li, Charles Wray

PFP Alumni Honors

Jansen Joehl, CFP® received the Gold Award from Northwestern Mutual. The award recognizes top production and client impact by a new financial representative in their third year in the business. Jansen graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2016 with a BS in Personal Financial Planning.
