The HES Research and Graduate Studies Office believes that many of the grand challenges that we face today can be solved by working together with faculty across the campus. The Office also believes that innovative thinking and new ideas can arise when a group of like-minded people get together and brainstorm freely with specific goals/intention. To facilitate this process, we operate a small grants program—HES Ideas Lab—to stimulate and accelerate the work of an interdisciplinary research group (NOTE: The use of the term “research” is intended to be inclusive of all types of research and creative activity within HES.)
The Ideas Lab specifically supports an interdisciplinary research group with specific targeted grant program in their hands. For example, this group has specific Request for Applications, Call for White Papers, Call for Letters of Intent, or Dear Colleagues Letters. We accept the calls with both current and past due dates because even if the call has passed the due date, the new call may be expected next year. The Group will meet together for a minimum of two days during the winter break (2019/2020) and produce the final products at the end of the two-day session. The group may consider working with a meeting or brainstorm facilitator for strategic brainstorming. The Office may be able to help identify appropriate facilitators if the group needs. The final products of HES Ideas Lab should be in a format of drafts of proposals, proposal development plans, or letters of intent.
The objectives of HES Ideas Lab link with the Chancellor’s MU Flagship of the Future, and specifically Scholarly Excellence: Research Growth Plans. It is expected that the focused brainstorming supported through HES Ideas Lab enhance the pursuit of opportunities with these plans. HES Ideas Lab focuses solely on objectives related to research, research funding, scholarship, and graduate education.
The HES Ideas Lab also links to the Margaret Mangel Catalyst Fund and/or Seeding Interdisciplinary Reserach Collaboration (SIRC) awards. HES Ideas Lab may complement faculty’s research projects funded by these awards. HES Ideas Lab may also be the result of HES Research Social events held in 2018.
This fall, HES Ideas Lab will fund one project up to $2,000 in fall 2019. The funds may be used for the group’s brainstorming activates, including the fee to hire a meeting facilitator(s), meeting room rentals, travel to meeting facilities, meals, supplies, and/or any other University-appropriate purpose (other than faculty salaries and benefits).
We recognize that this program is experimental and has limited resources. We evaluate it after the first session to gauge its effectiveness and future, and we appreciate any comments or suggestions for improvement from HES faculty and staff.
In general, the following guidelines define eligible collaborations for this competition:
- Collaborations must involve at least one HES unit, and at least one additional unit on campus, including HES. That is, a group may represent at least two units from HES, or one from HES and another from non-HES college. The total group size can be as small as three individuals and as large as seems feasible and reasonable to the group’s topic/goals, and can include any mixture of colleges and units.
- The group should have a specific Request for Applications, Call for White Papers, Call for Letters of Intent, or Dear Colleagues Letters that the group is targeting. The call could be current or past with the expectation of future calls.
- The collaboration can include any mixture of MU personnel (faculty, staff and students) and non-MU members within the minimums of (1) above.
- This competition is open to all HES tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty.
- Individual HES faculty may participate on more than one proposal but should serve as “lead coordinator” on only a single application.

- November 15, 2019 – Awards announced
- November 16, 2019 – Project period begins
- January 15, 2020 – Project period ends
- January 31, 2020 – Final reports due

Applications should comprise the following:
- Cover letter of interest signed by all HES faculty member(s) in group and their unit chair(s)
- Brief narrative (no more than three pages) that addresses the following:
- Research goal
- Names and affiliations of collaborators (including “lead collaborator” for purposes of this application)
- Targeted call for paper, call for letter of intent, call for white paper, or dear colleagues letter
- Expected outcomes of the brainstorming session
- Potential benefits for HES faculty and college
- Total funds requested (up to $2,000) and brief plans for use of funds
- Long-term (2-4 year) expectations for group
Successful applicants will have access to their funds during the brainstorming session. The funds may be used for the group’s brainstorming activates, including the fee to hire a meeting facilitator(s), meeting room rentals, travel to meeting facilities, meals, supplies, and/or any other University-appropriate purpose (other than faculty salaries and benefits).
Proposals will be reviewed by a committee consisting of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, HES Associate Dean for Extension, and possible outside evaluators.
- Degree of interdisciplinary involvement
- Potential to respond to the targeted call
- Relationship to wider research and creative agendas and priorities in HES and MU
- Feasibility of goals and activities
- Potential to produce the final products
- Potential for long-term involvement and collaborative productivity
- Grants will be managed in combination between units and the R&GS Office. Any funds not used by January 31, 2020, will revert back to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.
- The PI will submit the final products by January 31, 2020.
