Honors & Awards
On June 6, 2018, Dean Sandy Rikoon received the 26th honorary doctoral degree awarded by the University of South Bohemia, which was conferred through its College of Economics. Dean Rikoon has worked in the Czech Republic since 1993 when he was appointed to a National Academy of Sciences team studying environment and health in the country.
Dr. Rui Yao, Associate Professor, and Guopeng (Kevin) Cheng, PhD candidate in the Department of Personal Financial Planning received Consumer Movement Archives Applied Consumer Economics Award – Student Paper, "How is Student Loan Debt Associated with Home Ownership and Home Equity?" at the American Council on Consumer Interests Annual Conference, which took place May 17-19 in Clearwater Beach, FL. Dr. Yao was also installed as President of ACCI and also received the Honor a Mentor Award at the conference.
ACCI’s CFP Board’s Financial Planning Paper Award at the 2018 ACCI conference was awarded for "Framing Longevity Income," by Michael A. Guillemette, PhD, Assistant Professor, Texas Tech University, Jesse Jurgenson, PhD Student, Iowa State University, Deanna Sharpe, PhD, CFP®, Associate Professor, MU PFP, Xianwu (Sean) Zhang, PhD Candidate, Texas Tech University.
Dr. Laura Cole, Assistant Professor in Architectural Studies, received the Mizzou Online Outstanding Online Course Design Award (Spring 2018) for the development of Architectural Studies 2323 "Sustainable Building Design Fundamentals" online course.
On April 22, 2018, five MU Architectural Studies students were awarded second place in the annual Department of Energy Race to Zero Competition for their Zanos II home design. The student team included seniors Robin King, Jeremiah Vick, Macy Morley, Amy Niemeyer, and Michael Werkmeister. Michael Goldschmidt was the faculty advisor.
The American Association of Textile Chemists & Colorists held its 2nd annual AATCC and Runway of Dream Foundation "Fashion For All" Student Design Competition. Andrea Bilgrien won 3rd Place and received a $1,000 scholarship from the foundation for her entry, Gilded. The theme challenged students to design a clothing or accessory that reimagines fashion and function for people who are seated/wheelchair users.
Promotions and Tenure
Dr. Jung Ha-Brookshire, promotion from Associate Professor to Professor in Textile and Apparel Management, and, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies, College of Human Environmental Sciences.
Dr. Pam Hinton, promotion from Associate Professor to Professor in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology & Director of Nutritional Sciences Graduate Studies.
Dr. Kelli Canada, promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor with tenure, School of Social Work.
Dr. Sarah Killoren, promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor with tenure, Human Development and Family Science.
Dr. Victoria Vieira-Potter, promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor with tenure, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology.
New Faculty, Staff and Administrators
The College of Human Environmental Sciences welcomes new faculty to MU. They are Ashley Givens, Assistant Professor, and Anne Janku, Instructor, both in the School of Social Work. James Green is an Assistant Teaching Professor and Director of the Office for Financial Success in the Department of Personal Financial Planning. Katherene Anguah joins Nutrition and Exercise Physiology as an Assistant Research Professor.
HES Welcomes Liz Townsend Bird as Senior Director of Advancement
Liz Bird is no stranger to HES. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Textile and Apparel Management in 1996 and served as an Ambassador for the College and held leadership roles with HES Student Council and the Association of Textile and Apparel Management. She previously held the position of HES External Relations Director in HES before going on to serve as the Director of Development in the MU College of Engineering. As an alum, she also served as the HES Alumni Board president.
Liz has 16 years of experience in advancement, having worked in donor relations and advancement at Kansas State University and Stephens College, as well as at the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri. She replaces Ann Solomon who left MU in April 2018.
Welcome to New Department Leadership
Dr. Bimal Balakrishnan, Associate Professor, will be Chair of the Department of Architectural Studies starting September 1, 2018. Dr. Christine Proulx, Associate Professor, will assume the Interim Chair position in the Department of Human Development and Family Science (HDFS), also starting September 1, 2018. A national search for the Department Chair for HDFS will continue with Dr. Anna Ball, Professor of Agricultural Education and Leadership and Faculty Fellow in the Office of the MU Provost, as the search committee chair.
HES Welcomes to New Staff to the Dean's Office
Monique Jones joined the HES student services office on July 31, 2018 as Office Support IV, replacing Desiree Van Tassel. Monique, who is new to MU, earned a B.A. from the University of Iowa in Journalism and Mass Communications. She is originally from Kansas City. She has extensive training and experience in dance. Most recently she worked as the Director of Operations for Missouri Contemporary Ballet where she worked with a variety of communication formats, social media and outreach for the Ballet.
Trish Savage is not new to HES, but she is new in the Office of Research and Graduate Studies since October 16, 2017 when she joined the staff as a Business Support Specialist II. Before that she served as the Family Financial Education Specialist for HES Extension, headquartered in Saline County. She has been working for the University since 2006. Trish earned her B.S. from the University of Iowa and completed her Masters from MU in 2013.
