Criteria for Selection

Download Distinguished Research/Creative Activity Award Criteria (PDF)

This award recognizes a College of Human Environmental Sciences faculty member whose contributions and achievements in his/her field have distinguished him/her as an exemplar in the area of research/creative activity.

Eligibility

Tenured and tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track members of the faculty, as well as employees of HES Extension, as long as the nominee is a full-time employee of HES (75% or greater appointment in HES).

Completed Nomination Packets must include:

  1. The Distinguished Research/Creative Activity Award nomination form signed by the nominator; including a letter outlining the basis and rationale for the nomination. In 2 pages or less:

    • Clearly describe, using non-technical language, the most important aspect(s) of the nominee’s achievements/contributions/activities that qualify him/her for this award.
    • Describe the qualities of the nominee’s research/creative activity program that characterize excellence and impact.
    • Summarize prior recognition the nominee has received for both work and public service.
    • Other nominee contributions and achievements the selection committee should know about.
  2. A one to three-page biography and/or curriculum vitae.
  3. No more than three support letters that provide a clear description of the nominee’s research/creative activity contributions to the unit and/or College, giving evidence of the nominee’s outstanding research.
  4. Other pertinent material may be submitted, including no more than three research articles or examples of creative activity.

All nomination packets must be submitted to the College of Human Environmental Sciences
Office of Advancement, 122 Gwynn Hall, by no later than March 15th. Submit 3 copies.

This award recognizes a College of Human Environmental Sciences faculty member whose service has distinguished him/her as an exemplar in this area of the faculty role. This award is intended for the faculty member whose service goes above and beyond that expected as part of their faculty duties, one for whom service is an integral part of their academic lives. Service can be to the department or school, the college, the university, and to the community (local, state, and national). Particularly valued is service at more than one of these levels that contributes to the betterment of human lives and the promotion of social justice or reduction in social and environmental problems, in keeping with the mission of HES as a college.

Eligibility

Tenured and tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track members of the faculty, as well as employees of HES Extension, as long as the nominee is a full time employee of HES (75% or greater appointment in HES).

Completed Nomination Packets must include:

  1. The Distinguished Faculty Service Award nomination form signed by the nominator and a letter outlining the basis and rationale for the nomination. In 2 pages or less:

    • Clearly describe the most important aspect(s) of the nominee's service activities that qualify him/her for this award. Please delineate service at the levels of department/school, college, university, and larger community.
    • Some examples could include but are not limited to: length of time of service, amount of time spent on service, quality of service, impact on community, and prior awards received for service.
    • Describe how this nominee’s service compares to others in their field, both at MU and nationwide.
    • Other nominee contributions and achievements the selection committee should know about.
  2. A one to three (1-3) page summary of the most relevant service contributions.
  3. No more than three support letters that provide a clear description of the nominee’s service contributions.

This award recognizes a College of Human Environmental Sciences faculty member who, by attention and dedication to students, has demonstrated outstanding ability as a teacher.

Eligibility

Tenured and tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track members of the faculty, as well as employees of HES Extension, as long as the nominee is a full time employee of HES (75% or greater appointment in HES).

Completed Nomination Packets must include:

  1. The Outstanding Teacher Award nomination form signed by the nominator and a letter outlining the basis and rationale for the nomination. In 2 pages or less:

    • Describe the nominee’s teaching philosophy.
    • Tabulate the course sections taught during the last five semesters, including a description of whether the type of course is required or elective, enrollment, average student evaluation scores for each class taught, and the average departmental score and range for the same classes.
    • Summarize the nominee’s involvement in teaching related activities. Some examples might include, but are not limited to,: course and/or curriculum development and improvement, advising, innovative teaching activities, grants for teaching, activities in organizations, research activities directly related to teaching, commitment to sustained excellence in teaching and learning, ongoing assessment of improvements in teaching and learning quality and other significant contributions.
    • Other nominee contributions and achievements the selection committee should know about.
  2. A one to three-page biography and/or curriculum vitae.
  3. Two support letters from colleagues that provide a clear description of the nominee’s teaching contributions to the unit and/or College.
  4. Two support letters from students, current or previous, that provide clear evidence of the nominee’s teaching contributions.

This award recognizes a College of Human Environmental Sciences staff member for sustained excellence in executing assigned duties and effectiveness in support of the mission of their unit and the College. Staff members who have voluntarily assumed additional responsibilities, maintained and improved professional skills, provided support of consistently high quality, and have shown professional dedication may be nominated for the outstanding staff award.

Eligibility

All benefits-eligible, non-academic staff members who have been employed by the College full-time for at least three (3) years prior to the year of nomination. Please submit the entire nomination as a .pdf on e-mail by sending it to schultzn@missouri.edu.

Completed Nomination Packets must include:

  1. The Distinguished Staff Award nomination form signed by the nominator; including a one page summary or letter outlining the basis and rationale for the nomination.
  2. Two support letters that provide a clear description of the nominee’s contributions to the unit and/or College, giving evidence of the nominee’s outstanding service.

The nominee is to submit the following:

  • A current resume/vitae or biographical sketch.

Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of demonstrated excellence and lasting impact in the following areas:

  • Successful classroom performance
  • Enthusiasm and commitment
  • Satisfactory progress toward a degree
  • Mentoring to peers and/or undergraduates
  • Winners will be selected by the Graduate Awards and Fellowships Committee

Nomination Guidelines:

Each unit may nominate one graduate student for the HES Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award. Nomination packets must be submitted in electronic form using .pdf format. (Letters that the units receive must be scanned into the packet in the .pdf format.) Required documents are listed below. Scan the documents into one pdf file in the order listed below. Save the file with the nominated student’s name. Students may not self-nominate; units are asked to nominate a single student for the award.

  • Letter of nomination from Director of Graduate Studies or Unit Chair
  • Three to five additional letters of evaluation from:
    • faculty
    • graduate student colleagues and/or undergraduate students
    • at least one letter must be from an undergraduate student
  • Candidate's resume or curriculum vitae
  • NO ADDITIONAL MATERIALS MAY BE SUBMITTED!

Nomination Form Instructions

Nominations should be submitted using the online form below OR by downloading the RTF form. IN ADDITION, nominations must include the required supplemental information for each award (see selection criteria above). Both the nomination and supplemental information must be submitted electronically to the College of Human Environmental Sciences Office of Advancement no later than March 15th. Submit electronic copies to sandersal@missouri.edu.

Incomplete or late nominations will not be reviewed. Selection for awards will be based on the quality of the evidence of outstanding abilities, performance, and commitment to the unit and the college. A committee appointed by the Dean will make the selection of the recipient(s). The College isn’t obligated to make an award every year.
