TAM Senior Adrianne Perry
(pictured above). The College of Human Environmental Sciences congratulates Textile and Apparel Management senior, Adrianne Perry, on her outstanding record in women's gymnastics, not only at MU but also nationally.
   Mizzou gymnastics has made great strides in national prominence in the past few years, writes Dr. Kitty Dickerson, Chair of Textile and Apparel Management. The team is ranked No. 14 and Adrianne is ranked 15th in the nation in the all-around.  
 
  
In addition, Adrianne was chosen for the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics Team (First Team)!!  For more information about Perry click here.

Grant Awards and Proposals 
In the period between November 1, 2008 - February 28, 2009, HES and HES Extension faculty and staff were principal investigators or project directors on a total of 29 grant proposals submitted to external funding agencies, totaling $4,737,689. During this same period, HES and HES Extension received grant awards totaling $523,418.  These are only the proposals for which HES or HES Extension faculty and staff members are principal investigators or project directors.  There are additional proposals submitted by other divisions where our faculty and staff members are acting as co-investigators or co-project directors.

Focus on Research
David Schramm, assistant professor, (pictured left) and Kim Allen, Extension State Specialist, both in human development and family studies, are Co-PIs, and Kim Anderson, associate professor in the School of Social Work, is a co-investigator on the Healthy Relationships and Marriage Education Training Project (HRMET) awarded by the Administration for Children and Families. The award amount is $1,240,070, which will run from 2009 through 2013.  Featured in the Fall 2008 issue of MU's research publication, Illumination, Schramm's research interests focus on remarriages and stepfamilies; relationship and marriage education; transition to marriage and newlywed years; and economic consequences of divorce.
      Anderson's research areas include assessment of risk and resiliency factors in trauma populations; enhancing strengths-based mental health practice; and adverse consequences of domestic violence, rape, and poverty experienced by women.

News Bits
 Professor Mark A. Fine, Co-chair and Professor, Larry Ganong,  both of the Human Development and Family Studies Department, and
 former MU HDFS faculty member, David Demo (now at the University of
 North Carolina-Greensboro), recently revised their chapter, "Divorce: A
 Risk and Resilience Perspective." This chapter will appear in the third
 edition of Families and Change, a book edited by Sharon Price of the
 Univeristy of Georgia and published by Sage.
     Steve Ball's research appeared in the February 2009 issue of  O, The Oprah Magazine, published by Oprah Winfrey, which compared Weight WatchersTM to joining a gym for changes in body weight and body composition.

Steve Ball, Associate Professor, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology Extension and Robin Gammon, Extension Associate, recently released the new Adult Physical Activity Pyramid.  Read more about the Activity Pyramid in the February MU News Bureau article.

     Candance Gabel, Human Environmental Sciences Extension assistant director, was elected for a two-year term as co-chair of the Association of State Nutrition Network Administrators.

     Dr. Melissa Herzog, research specialist for tthe Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders and adjunct assistant professor in Human Development and Family Studies, is a chapter contributor for the fourth edition of the book, Families and Change.  Her chapter is "Families, Stress, and Intervention."  Herzog originally co-authored in the 3rd edition with her dissertation advisor at ASU, but she is sole author on this edition.

     An article will be published in the forthcoming issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research titled "Lean body mass and weight-bearing activity in the prediction of bone mineral density in physically active men."  First author is Dr. Scott Rector, Gastroenterology.  Co-authors are Bob Rogers, Matt Widzer and Meghan Ruebel, students who worked on the project.  Senior author is Pam Hinton, Associate Professor, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology.  Hinton's research is also featured on-line at ABC News, High Impact Exercise May be Best Bone Builder, March 12, 2009.

    Human Development and Family Studies master's student, Anthony James, and several Extension colleagues, including Jo Turner, Ina Linville and Tammy Gillespie, have an article accepted for publication in the Journal of Extension titled "4-H Youth Futures: College Within Reach."

     PRESENTATIONS:

     Dr. Marilyn Coleman, professor, Human Development and Family Studies, presented a round table on "How to Build Affinity in Stepfamilies." She was ably assisted by Dr. Lawrence Ganong, professor and co-chair, whose name was omitted from the program, but who served unswervingly nonetheless.
